Odds and Ends

I’m finding it’s hard to take the time to write in here, now that life is back to normal and things are moving along at a regular pace.  Even though it’s just been regular, normal life, there’s still been a lot of things going on over the last couple of months that I haven’t written about and I wanted to write about them before I forget.
The kids have been busy with school activities.  Davis won her school’s Spelling Bee, but when she saw the list of words for the district competition, she decided she didn’t want to win that level.  She didn’t want to get out in the first round either, but she didn’t want to win and have to learn even more weird words!  Her plan was all good and well, until she got to the district competition and saw the TROPHY she would get to take home if she won.  Davis has ALWAYS wanted a trophy!  Davis was one of the last 6 kids left in the competition when she got the word “GEODE” to spell.  As soon as I heard it, I knew she’d be able to spell that word.  Duke is OBSESSED with rocks, constantly collects them, and got two geodes for Christmas presents.  She hears so much about geodes from her brother that I knew this word wouldn’t be a problem for her.  She confidently leaned into the microphone and spelled “G-E-O-D”.   Huh?  Poor thing!  She was pretty upset that she got it wrong, but felt much better after snuggling up to me in the audience.  I was proud of her regardless, and proud of the effort she put in to prepare.  I never once had to remind her to practice.  She studied all by herself without any help from me, and I’m most proud of her for that.

Duke got to play basketball and did a great job.  He made several baskets throughout the season, but his team lost most of their games.  He had a good time though, and he got some physical exercise out of it, so it was worth the experience.  He also had his school choir program and said his lines without any problem.  Right now he is obsessed with the Pinewood Derby coming up this weekend.  He planned his car all by himself and then Brock helped him cut, sand, and paint it.  This is our first year doing the Pinewood Derby, but with 4 boys, we’ve got lots of Pinewood Derbies in our future!
Gage, Trayson, and Flint have just been busy playing, growing, and learning.  Gage has had lots of fun experiences at preschool and Trayson’s had a blast at letter group with his cute little friends.  Flint is charming the world and progressing wonderfully, but I’ll write more details about his progress in another post.

Right now we are all looking forward to track season.  That is the kids’ favorite sport and we always look forward to watching them run their little hearts out.  Trayson is still too young to compete in that sport, but he does get to try soccer, so he’s pretty excited about that.  One of my favorite things about track season and Spring soccer is that it signals that school is almost out.  Only a couple of more months to go until Summer is here!  Woo-Hoo!
Over the last month, we’ve been blessed to spend a little extra time with extended family.  My sister and her husband, Megan and Andrew, came up for Valentine’s weekend and we had a great time hanging out with them.  Then the next weekend, Flint and I flew to San Antonio to surprise that same sister for her 30th birthday.  Andrew planned a surprise party for her, and since Megan is always the first to offer her help to the rest of the family, we all made it a priority to be there for her celebration.  It was a lot of fun and a TOTAL surprise to her!
Brock and the kids had Spring Break last week, so we all drove to San Antonio to use our Sea World season passes that we got for Christmas.  The weather was lousy most of the time we were there, but we still got two good days at the park and lots of good relaxing.
There’s really not much else going on right now, and for that I am SO grateful!  I can take a little down time after the year we’ve had!
